Power Rangers to Continue with Nickelodeon Through 2021

Following the news that casting would begin in mid-march for the 26th season of Power Rangers, we now have news through ComicBook.com that the show will continue with Nickelodeon through 2021.

Saban Brands and Nickelodeon announced today that they’ve extended their partnership in the U.S. until 2021. Nickelodeon has been the home of Power Rangers since Saban Brands purchased it back from Disney, debuting on the network with 2011’s Power Rangers Samurai.

“Saban’s Power Rangers has been on the air for 25 continuous seasons and we are thrilled to extend our long-standing and collaborative partnership with Nickelodeon through 2021 to continue to deliver action-packed adventures to a new generation of kids,” said Janet Hsu, Chief Executive Officer of Saban Brands. “We are excited for the year ahead and what’s to come for the Power Rangers franchise.”

There is still no word on which Sentai will be adapted for the 26th season, though fans hope it will be Uchu Sentai Kyuranger. Word has gone around that Bandai America has helped develop the season, leading fans to believe it is the logical next step for Power Rangers.

This will give us two more seasons (or, depending on how you count it four) of the Power Rangers franchise, giving us 29 seasons. While there were many rumors going around that due to the wait for the announcement of an extension through Nickelodeon, and the official announcement of the next season that the show would end at season 25, this looks as if Saban Brands is gearing towards a rounded 30 seasons. Not many television shows, and kids shows, have lasted that long and is an impressive feat.

It is important, however, to point out that while it would be great to have Power Rangers reach 30 seasons, the extension through 2021 is only for three years. Three years for two seasons. What does this mean about the upcoming seasons? We’ll get a two season theme and then a one season theme? One theme lasting three years for a longer season? No one knows at this moment. A logical assumption would be that it extends in 2021 to at least start planning the next batch of seasons should the show continue forward.

As we wait for news on which new season will be coming, hopefully that news arrives soon, in the meantime, you can also catch new episodes of Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel airing at 12pm ET/PT on Nickelodeon.
