Not only are the comics getting zord variant covers, but villain variant covers are being offered as well. These will be “unlocked” by retailers if there is enough demand for the comics. The first cover has been revealed by Entertainment Weekly and the others will be revealed through various outlets throughout the week. There are many different covers being offered for these upcoming comics and here’s the list of ones revealed:
Variant Cover #1 (IGN): Jason and the TRex Zord
Main Cover/Variant #4 (LA Times): Rangers fighting Putties
Variant #5 (Comics Alliance): The Rangers in suit and in new, modern, civilian wear
There’s some new information about Boom! Studios’ MMPR comics involving the covers and it’s release date. When the news about the comics was first revealed, many different images, depicting the 6 Rangers, and even Tommy’s White Ranger suit, were revealed. With the release of the new comics, (with Issue #1 depiciting the “Green Ranger: Year One” story arc set up in Issue #0) expect the same, but with the zords!
Each comic will have a zord variant cover and this is the first look at Jason and the T-Rex Zord.

Drawn by, Goñi Montes, this will be the first variant cover to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #1. And there are more zord variant covers to come for the first official issue. There will be eight over covers for issue #1, and we’ll see them soon as they’ll be revealed this week. And those eight aren’t including any retailer variants, either.
While issue #0 will be releasing in January, the official start of the comics, Issue #1, will release in March, confirming TokuNation’s earlier post. And Issue #1 will also feature a story about the duo, Bulk and Skull; written by Steve Orlando and drawn by Corin Howell. These two will also be working on Issue #0.
Writer, Kyle Higgins, talked to GQ about the comic series stating:
It’s 2015. It’s 2015 Angel Grove, It’s a 2015 version of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and it focuses on the Green Ranger. As far as modernizing it goes, [it’s] the aesthetic, and really being able to dive into the characters in a way that the show wasn’t able to, because we’re telling a big serialized story. I don’t want to say it’s going to make them cool, but it’s going to make them feel like more well-rounded people. It won’t feel like 1994.
Higgins will work on the comic series with artists and writers like Steve Orlando, Mairghread Scott, Hendry Prasetyo, and Daniel Bayliss. In regards to what kind of story the 2015 version could be, Higgins said:
The story that I’m telling could only really be told with Tommy in this particular era. And it very much speaks to some of [these] ideas and themes: empowerment, joining a team, and being a part of a team. Tommy as the Green Ranger, he’s a great way to explore those ideas. Because, thinking about his history—he was a dark ranger for Rita, who came out of that and became a part of the team proper—that’s a lot of material to mine. And it’s a lot that the show touched on, dealing with the things that he went through and trying to move past them,” Higgins says. “But I might have already said too much!
It’s good versus evil in its purest, best form.
